Fretting corrosion is a common form of corrosion encountered in ball bearings. The following points outline preventive measures to guard against fretting corrosion in ball bearings:
1. Ensure proper fit.
2. Ensure the bearing housing is properly machined.
3. Ensure the bearing housing complies with dimensional and geometric specifications (even after equipment overhaul).
4. If a clearance fit is used, consider applying an anti-creep corrosion paste or coating to a bearing surface.
The following is a case study on fretting corrosion in ball bearings
The figure below illustrates a case of fretting corrosion resulting from an improper fit between the bearing and the shaft, causing the inner ring of the ball bearing to become excessively loose.

The figure below illustrates a case of fretting corrosion resulting from an improper fit between the bearing and the shaft, which caused uneven support of the ball bearing's inner ring.

The figure below illustrates the fretting corrosion occurring in a ball bearing, resulting from fretting marks caused by insufficient bearing precision.
