POM Plastic Bearings

Plastic Ball Bearings

Plastic ball bearings are bearings built from plastics, such as nylon, acetal, and PTFE. They can be self-lubricating when combined with carbon graphite and other non-metallic materials.

These types of bearings were a necessary development to replace metallic bearings in applications with a higher risk of corrosion, electrical conduction, and magnetism.

Benefits of Plastic Ball Bearings

Lightweight: Plastic is five times lighter than steel, thereby reducing the weight and energy to move them.

Corrosion Resistant: Plastic ball bearings can be utilized in environments destructive to conventional bearings. Plastic, by its nature, does not corrode. Our bearings can operate in hostile environments such as sea water, silicon wafer processing, plating solutions and swimming pools.

Customizable Design: Custom designs are readily and inexpensively made from plastics. This allows engineers complete freedom to design the bearing around the device rather than attempting to design the device around a limited range of standard bearings.

Lubrication Free: Steel bearings require lubrication to reduce friction, dissipate heat and prevent corrosion. Due to the design of plastic ball bearings, there is no metal to metal contact, which results in less friction. Many times the liquids the bearings are running in can dissipate heat and act as the lubricant.

Noise Control: Plastic has the inherent ability to dampen vibrations. Add lubrication and they become virtually silent.

Product Integration: A plastic bearing can be mounted into other components or parts such as plastic wheels, pulleys or housings. In certain design concepts, seamless integration can be achieved where the bearing will have the pulley profile as the outer ring, and the shaft or a fixing clip replaces the inner ring. This integration lowers assembly time and also results in the utilization of fewer parts, increasing affordability.

Cleanliness/Hygienic: Plastic bearings generally operate cleaner than metal bearings because they do not need lubrication, they are resistant to corrosion, and they can be washed down without the worry of re-lubing. This capability makes them a viable option for cleanroom environments, and wash down applications.

Shock Absorption: Plastic absorbs shock loads better than metal due to its elastic nature. Many conventional ball bearings fail due to brinelling of the raceway, i.e. balls denting the raceways.

Types of Plastic Ball Bearings

Single-row deep grove plastic ball bearings
This type of bearing (no matter the material) has a wide range of applications. This is because they are built to withstand heavy loads and high operating speeds.

In applications where the load is both axial (acting along the shaft) and radial (acting around the side of the shaft), deep groove ball bearings have proven to be dependable. Although the amount of axial load capacity is limited. But when built of plastic, this gives a silent and smooth bearing.

Thrust plastic ball bearings
This is a type of rotary bearing built specifically for axial load, not radial loads. They are available as single direction or double direction thrust ball bearings and are designed to support thrust loads at high speeds. The plastic variant of thrust ball bearings makes them the best option for high-precision use.

Angular contact plastic ball bearings

Angular contact bearings have their bearing axis at an angle with the line of action of the load. And this load could be radial or thrust loads. But the thrust can only be in one direction. They’re ideal for high-speed applications.

Self-aligning plastic ball bearings

How can a plastic ball bearing be self-aligning? When its outer ring’s trajectory is spherical. The center of curvature of the bearing matches the center of the bearing. This allows the inner ring, ball, and retainer to rotate freely around the bearing center. And that’s how it aligns itself.

Miniature plastic ball bearings

They’re smaller versions of plastic bearings and are required for small diameter parts and lighter applications. Even though they’re small, they’re built to support the load they bear and perform well in high-precision equipment and applications too small for other types of plastic bearings.

Four common plastic bearing materials

Acetal bearing material

This material is the lowest price, it is on the steel dynamic, static friction factor are extremely low, strength and stiffness is also higher, commonly used to manufacture light load with outer ring overall bearing seat;

nylon bearing materia

Is a cheap and low friction factor of the material, self-lubricating, often added graphite, molybdenum disulfide and polytetrafluoroethylene and other fillers to increase self-lubrication, strength and stiffness, working temperature up to 120 ℃;

PTFE bearing material

The friction factor is the smallest, and when the load increases, the friction factor decreases accordingly, often adding glass fiber, graphite, bronze powder, etc. to improve the performance indicators, the working temperature is relatively high;

phenolic bearing material

Higher strength, high temperature, but the friction factor is larger, faster wear, with polytetrafluoroethylene resin for the filler, can reduce the friction factor and improve life.

Available in standard inch and metric sizes

Plastic race bearings can be made in special sizes and types in small and large quantities.
Plastic radial ball bearings offer many advantage over standard steel bearings.
