One of the most common conversations in any workshop goes like this: "just grab a bearing and put it in." Nine times out of ten, what gets grabbed is a single row deep groove ball bearing. That isn't a coincidence. Its structure is almost embarrassingly simple, yet it covers the majority of rotating applications in industry - which is exactly why engineers call it the Conrad type. This article walks through the ball bearing single row deep groove structure, where its real limits sit, and when you should switch to something else.
Start with the structure. A ball bearing single row deep groove consists of four parts: the inner ring, the outer ring, a cage, and one row of steel balls. The key is the raceway - the grooves on both rings are deep, and their cross-section radius is only slightly larger than the ball radius. The cage matters too: a stamped steel cage covers normal duty, while high speed or large sizes justify a machined brass cage.
