Micro vibration corrosion of general bearings occurs in the contact area, which is caused by micro motion under periodic vibration and elastic contact force. Depending on the vibration intensity, lubrication conditions, and load, corrosion and wear may occur simultaneously, causing shallow depressions in the raceway. If the bearing is stationary, this recess has the characteristic of equal rolling element spacing:
Spherical recess (ball bearing)
Longitudinal indentation (roller bearing)
In applications where grease lubrication is used, micro vibration corrosion of bearings is usually reddish brown in color;
In applications where oil lubrication is used, micro vibration corrosion of bearings results in very bright mirror like indentations.
In many cases, we can distinguish between bearing dents and rust. This is because the particles separated from the bearing are exposed to air, and their oxidation leads to a larger distribution area. Compared to their volume, the distribution area of the separated particles in the bearing is larger (due to contact with air).
Usually, the damage to the rolling elements of bearings is relatively small.

The following figure shows the damage caused by micro vibration corrosion on the outer ring of a cylindrical roller bearing. The fundamental cause of the damage is the external vibration during the shutdown state. The application of bearings is auxiliary equipment, which is in a shutdown state for a long time. There are several sets of "grooves" at the distance between the rollers, and each set of "grooves" corresponds to a different downtime period. The severity of the damage depends on the level and frequency of vibration, as well as the length of downtime.
